Working Dogs

A working dog refers to a canine working animal, i.e. a type of dog that is not merely a pet but learns and performs tasks to assist and/or entertain its human companions, or a breed of such origin. In Australia and New Zealand a working dog is one which has been trained to work livestock, irrespective of its breeding.

The term ‘work like a dog’ is true. Dogs can work in many different jobs. Their most common job is to bring joy to lonely people, families and children. In most cases, these working dogs are paid in love. Here are a few examples of working dogs.

Farm Dogs

When you hear the phrase ‘working dogs’ you think of farm dogs. These are the original working dogs. They have a natural instinct for working livestock and herding sheep. My Corgi loved rounding up the lawnmower and vacuum cleaner.

Dog breeds that are associated with this type of working dog are:

Welsh Collie, Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The Australian Kelpie originated from the old British working Collie. The Australian Cattledog is also known as Blue Heeler, Red Heeler and Queensland Heeler.

The use of motorcycles instead of working dogs on a property has become more popular but nothing can replace a trained working dog.

Guard Dogs

People think that their dog is a guard dog because he barks (refer my article ‘To Bark or Not to Bark - That is the Question’). These dogs are working dogs but are really watch dogs. They bark to warn. A guard dog is a working dog who is trained and employed to retrain or attack an intruder.

Most common dog breeds used for this kind of working dog are:

Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Bullmastiff and American Bulldog.

Police Dogs

These working dogs are trained specifically to assist Police in various areas.

Public Order Enforcement - trained to chase and detain suspects.

Illicit Substances Dogs - (sniffer dogs) detect illicit substances e.g. drugs, explosives. These working dogs are also used by Customs to sniff out illegal importation of wildlife, plants etc.
These working dogs are mainly Beagles.

Cadaver dogs - Because dogs have an acute sense of smell they can detect the odour of decomposing bodies.

Tracking - Locate suspects or find missing people. Bloodhounds are mainly used.

Guide Dogs - Companion Dogs

These working dogs aren’t trained just to assist the blind. They can be used as companions to children and adults who are disabled, old, vision and hearing impaired, isolated.

It takes nearly 2 years to train a pup to become a working dog and includes 5 months of intensive dog training. After about 14 months with a Puppy Raiser, the pup goes to the Guide Dog Centre where he is assessed. If he doesn’t qualify to become a working dog for the Guide Dogs, he is again assessed to become a Pets for Therapy working dog for disadvantaged people. If the pup fails he is then offered to the Puppy Raiser as a pet.

The only dog breeds used are purebred Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Labrador/Golden Retriever crosses because they are calm, loyal and intelligent.

Working dogs are used in a greater capacity today as man realises the benefits of having a canine friend in the workplace.

My website, http://www.corgidogworld.com was designed to give information about the Corgi breed of dog. If you are wishing to add a dog to your family, then this site will help you to decide which breed would be most suitable to your lifestyle. I also offer a comprehensive range of quality products to assist in the wellbeing of your dog.

Bad Dog Food

Bad Dog Food - The Stomach-Churning Poisonous Death Blend in Your Puppy’s Bowl
By Rick Stegren

Your pet is probably eating bad dog food Actually, calling it "bad dog food" is an understatement. If you’re feeding your dog store-purchased food, you’re filling its bowl with one of the most ghastly, stomach-turning collections of disgusting and deadly filth you could ever imagine. Let’s take a look at what’s really in that allegedly safe dog food you find on store shelves.

Byproducts. That doesn’t sound that bad, does it? A little "animal byproduct" in your dog’s food doesn’t seem that creepy until you realize what that actually means. That "meal and bone" and those "byproducts" are horrific beyond imagination.

After the factory strips off those drumsticks and breasts from a turkey and wraps it up for sale in your local supermarket, they make use of the carcass. That collection of dead skin, feet, eyes and beaks gets shipped off for "treatment". So do the dying (and already dead) cattle that couldn’t make the cut for human consumption. Chicken parts, too. Oh, and plenty of that roadkill you drive by on the highway gets tossed into plastic bags and sent to the dog food people. Pets? What happens to those strays who’ve been put to sleep? They become "byproducts" too, teeth and all.

The corpses are shredded and dumped into a vat where they’re cooked until the fat is separated. The dog food companies skim off the putrid fat and everything that remains is suddenly "meal and bone", appropriate for use in dog food Cat claws, euthanized pet dogs, roadkill, chicken beaks and cattle with mystery ailments are all ground up to feed your pet.

That’s disgusting enough on its own, but it gets even worse when you realize that "quality control" in the dog food business isn’t all that great. The dead cat’s flea collar makes it to the grinder. The body bag that held the maggot-riddled corpse of unlucky road kill might make it into the mix, too. That’s right, all of that "bone and meal" is paired with ground plastic.

A little plastic can’t be good for your dog, but it’s not like it’s going to kill the animal after one bite, right? It’s not like we’re talking about a highly toxic poison, are we? Actually, we are. Those euthanized strays who died after taking a shot of poision are in that mix and that poison remains in there, too. Boiling ground corpses in a vat at 250 degrees doesn’t destroy the toxins. There is often a measurable quantity of deadly poison in commercial dog food

We’re just scratching the surface of bad dog food too. Dog food makers use crazy fillers made up of fake proteins that don’t do anything for your pet–they just make the label seem a little more respectable. There’s also the uncomfortable fact that they use creepy additives that have been banned from human food. Can you guess why those bad dog food additives aren’t allowed in the human food supply? Sadly enough, it’s because their known to encourage disease and even to cause cancer.

That’ what’s in your dog’s bowl. Disease-riddled corpses, animal waste, plastic, poison and destructive additives. To make matters worse, you can’t even trust the label on the bag. Labeling requirements are loose and a dog food company can claim that their peddling a natural product even when they aren’t. The company on the label isn’t deemed responsible for all of the nasty stuff that makes it into the "raw ingredients" it buys.

If you’re buying dog food from a grocery or pet store, you are poisoning your beloved pet. There’s no way around it. The garbage posing as dog food is despicable and anyone who really cares about the welfare of animals should be absolutely steadfast in their refusal to purchase the stuff.

Some researchers contend that countless dogs die outright from nasty, bad dog food and that every dog who consumes this sick garbage loses time off its lifespan with every bit.

You didn’t mean to do it, but you’ve been killing your pet.

What are you going to do now? You can pretend like you don’t know the truth, but that’s both cruel to your pet and dishonest. You have an alternative. You can make dog food yourself. Homemade dog food is a breeze to make and it allows you to make sure that your dog isn’t being forced to consume the kind of dreck that makes it into commercial dog food It’s cheap, fast, easy and infinitely more healthy than the major label bad dog food most pet owners use.

Warning: Tainted Dog Food Supplies Pose Major Risks. Commercially Available Dog Foods May Encourage Early Pet Death.
