Housebreaking Your Puppy

By Andrew Kuster

A simple matter of repetition is needed to house break your dog. After they eat take them out and reward them with praise when the go to the bathroom. I typically start my day by taking my dogs out and 5 minutes might pass but the results are there. I then take them back in and go to work on weekdays and come home at noon and let them out. After a good romp I let them back in and do the same at 4 and 7pm. With a schedule you can house break your dog in a day or two. Of course some dogs are worse than others but its not as hard as people lead it to be.

Housebreaking your dog is easy - once you understand the basics of "why", "when", and "where" your puppy/dog wishes to defecate and urinate. By following our procedures, your puppy/dog should be housebroken within the next 10 days.

"WHY" AND "WHEN"

The only three times a puppy normally defecates or urinates are:

1) when he/she eats or drinks anything;

2) when he/she has processed the food and liquid they have eaten;

3) when he/she wakes up from sleeping.

After the puppy eats or drinks, their system tells them to let go of their old reserve which is stored inside the body. The reason the dog’s body stores this reserve is because in the wild, the dog may not "catch the rabbit." Meaning, the dog must catch it’s meal. If it does not catch the meal, the dog’s body will continue to use it’s "stored reserve" of food from the last meal. Once the dog eats or drinks anything, it’s body "lets go" of this stored amount. So after your puppy/dog eats or drinks, he/she must defecate and urinate.

Your puppy/dog’s body does not utilize everything they eat or drink. They may only use sixty percent of what they eat or drink. The puppy/dog’s body changes the food and water into energy. It stores what it needs for it’s reserve and then "lets go" of the rest. It takes energy just to digest the food and water. This is why your puppy/dog normally sleeps after he/she has a big meal. And after the puppy/dog has processed the food and water (through it’s body) it must defecate and urinate. Defecating and urinating is the puppy/dog’s way of eliminating waste and toxins from it’s body. Again, the most common reason for a puppy/dog to wake up from sleeping is because it must defecate or urinate. " WHERE" The reason your puppy/dog smells the ground before he/she urinates or defecates is because they are trying to smell ammonia. They like to go to the bathroom where other animals (or themselves) have gone before. When they smell ammonia, it is like a neon light saying "rest room here!"

Your puppy/dog does not enjoy the smell of their own defecation or urination. Because of this, he/she will not go exactly where they sleep. They may go a few feet away from where they sleep, but not exactly where they sleep.

Dog Doors For Your Home

By Jacob Paciorek

Anyone with a dog know that getting up countless times a day to let your dog outside can be distracting to say the least. More and more, due to work schedules, there simply isn’t anyone at home to let out the family pet. For a moment let’s put ourselves in our dog’s position. Someone is kind enough to show affection in the morning, maybe a gentle pat on the head and a big bowl of your favorite gruel for breakfast. Of course, this gruel makes a fellow thirsty, so you chase it down with a healthy thirst quenching drink. Following this invigorating, rejuvenating meal, your master lets you outside to walk around….sniff out what happened overnight and then allows you back inside, just before they take off for work. Thirty to forty-five minutes go by and then you realize…..Now it’s time to really go outside!

We often think about the freedom a dog door provides us. A dog door also provides access and freedom for your pet. You may even find that you have a healthier, happier pet as well. Dogs especially are inquisitive, they really do want to know what is going on outside, who may be in the yard, or just have a need to exercise their extraordinary scent detection abilities to know what is going on at a distance. Dogs have since their ancestral origins patrolled, guarded and warned others of their pack. The dog’s master and family is their pack, we often forget to let a dog exercise their innate behavior.

Dog doors come in variety of styles from insulated models to automatic and electronic dog doors. In today’s marketplace one can most often find a dog door that will fit thin the dog owner’s requirements. The area that the dog will have access to is also something to consider. Make sure that your dog is well trained and understands the boundaries of your property. This is done by walking the dog around the perimeter of the yard or area so that there is a familiarization of those boundaries. Acclimating your dog to other dogs is another step that is important in controlling your pet’s behavior. The more you can expose your dog to other dogs, the easier it is to predict your pet’s actions in chance dog meetings. Remember, a well behaved, well trained dog is a happy safe dog. Dogs are very smart, that is why they make great companions. Tap into that intelligence and interact with your dog in form of obedience and verbal commands. This goes along towards the rewarding relationship that you can cultivate with effort and patience.

Now the stage is set for that dog door you have been waiting for. The freedom a dog door provides along with the comfort of knowing how your pet reacts makes allows you’re the peace of mind and your dog the freedom they crave.

Why Do People Kill Their Dogs?

By John Z Birch

I was out the other day walking my dogs enjoying the way they were playing running as fast as their legs could carry them. There is an absolute beauty in watching a dog stretching and flexing as it darts from place to place, as my dogs rolled into a snarling fun ball. Then I saw in the distance what I at first thought was the Goodyear blimp on all fours. Surprise, Surprise another fat labrador stuffed to exploding by its oh so loving owner. Even its bark had become a heavy thing that it wasn’t really sure it could be bothered to produce it.

Now those of you who have fat dogs may well be saying ‘it probably has a glandular problem’ ‘if hes like mine hes always hungry’ or ‘he probably loves his treats’, ‘how can you possibly deny those eyes’. What I say is that your dog is fat because you feed him too much and more than likely don’t exercise him either. People put there own need for comfort, onto the dogs, that they say are their best friends.’oh I didn’t walk him today, sorry have a biscuit’

A dog by his very nature is an opportunist, if he knows that whining a bit, barking a bit or looking sad will get him food that is what he will do. If you as his owner give him what he wants then he will get the size of a barrel and you will have to fit him with an electric whizzy walker to get around the park, is this your idea of the proud wolf? Its certainly not mine!

If you want your dog to be healthy, and happy here are the golden rules.

Buy a complete diet dog food.

Make sure water is always available.

Feed your dog twice a day (once in the morning, once in the evening)

Feed them the recommended amount for your breed of dog for the day. Half in the morning, half in the afternoon.

If you want to give your dogs a treat in the day or while training take it out of their daily feed.

Take your dog for at least a 15 minute brisk walk every day.

If your dog doesn’t loose weight reduce the food a little and increase the duration of your walks. An owner that is ensuring that their dog receives what it needs, is an owner that cares about its well being. A dog that is not overfed or under exercised will hardly ever suffer from ailments that an overfed dog suffers from over weight dogs are more at risk when having an operation, more prone to injury, and have more stress on their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints. When your dog becomes the well toned animal it should be, only then can you say that you truly love your animal.

If you don’t want to follow this simple advice talk to your vet, or just pop into your local vets and speak to the receptionists they normally have a leaflet on good practice. Dogs don’t need constant attention, they just need you to be their master.

Killing Dog Fleas - Why All the Fuss?

By Russell Shepherd

Do you know why killing dog fleas is so important? Most people understand that fleas are bad and need to be eliminated, but not everyone knows all the reasons why. If you have a better understanding of the threat that fleas pose to your beloved dog, then you may want to devote more time and effort to treating dog fleas.

Fleas are difficult to see. Even with the best eyesight, fleas are barely more than tiny black specks that are visible one second and vanish the next. However, for creatures that are so small in size, they are very hardy. In fact, they are like little survival machines.

You must not let the size of the typical flea fool you. Even though they are only a fraction of an inch in size, they can perform amazing feats. For example, fleas can jump up to 200 times its length at one go. Imagine how handy that skill is for a parasite looking for a new host. They can see an inviting new home walking by and hop on at will.

Once they have landed on their home, fleas can easily wander through the forest of fur until they find a place to settle in. Think about it. What are the chances that you will ever see fleas on your dog until they multiply into a large population?

Even if a flea is discovered, they are remarkably difficult to kill. They cannot be simply squashed like a normal bug. If you do not finish off the flea completely, then they may just jump back on and continue what they started.

Now multiply these difficulties by 1000 or more. Treating dog fleas becomes a nightmare when fleas have had a chance to reproduce. The egg-laying rate of a typical adult flea can be up to 50 eggs a day. You do the math. A single flea can produce quite a crowd, and once the crowd gets going…well, things can get out of control pretty quickly.

We have established that fleas can reproduce at a frightening rate. And, we have also determined that once they set up housekeeping on your dog, they may be difficult to evict. But why all the fuss? Why is killing dog fleas so essential?

What do fleas eat? Blood, and lots of it. One flea can be responsible for 400 bites a day. With each bite, the flea consumes more than its own weight in blood. And that’s just one flea. Imagine what thousands are doing to your furry best friend!

There’s another danger too. When your dog itches, he scratches. Wouldn’t you? Except your dog doesn’t know when to stop scratching. There is a real possibility that he’ll keep scratching until damage is done, like wounds, skin disorders and hair loss.

Fleas represent other health threats as well. Some dogs are allergic to fleas. Ingesting fleas can lead to other parasite infestations as well like tapeworms. Fleas represent a much greater danger than simple irritation. When all the wrong circumstances come together they can be deadly.

Fleas are easy to get and hard to get rid of. Treating dog fleas is not something that will happen as an afterthought. Make killing dog fleas a priority and give your dog the good health he deserves.

Change My Puggles for Another Dog? Not On Your Life!

By Christy Taylor

Over the years, I’ve had a few different breeds of dogs, and I’ve loved them all. When I was a kid, for example, my folks had four poodles Kippy, Piere, Beau and Squiggy (yes, named after the show (Lavern and Shirley), and as fierce as it looked to strangers, it was nothing but a bunch of big cuddly toys to me and my sister. Then, as I hit my teens and the four poodles passed on, my mother brought home a box. Out popped this bull frog eye, snorting, wrinkled black animal. Was a dog or a pig?

At the time, our house had a circle hallway and all I can remember is this animal jumping out of the box and running into our bathroom, grabbing the toilet paper from the roller and running excitedly around the hallways in circles. Needless to say, the animal calmed down and I was able to take another look at her. Yes, it was a girl, a dog, and a Pug. My mom couldn’t resist her from the dog store in the local mall and so she brought her home. Her name was Katie and she became the baby of the household, literally! We couldn’t call her a dog, she had to be called Katie or baby and we even had to take turns, my sister and I, holding her bone for her while she chewed for hours on it. Sadly, Katie got older and passed on, but her spirit lives on forever in our families households. It was so bad, that my mom had to move out of the house that we lived in, because she couldn’t bear the memories of Katie and her favourite tree. My mom now has three dogs, which consist of two pugs and a shit-zuh.

Now that I’m older, married, and have four kids and my own home, I have four dogs as well, like when I was growing up. As much as I could have had one that was similar to the dogs I knew in my childhood, I wanted something different, something unusual - so I got myself a puggle.

For anyone who’s never seen a puggle, it’s a wonderful cross between a beagle and a pug, which in my mind has got to be one of the greatest mixes ever - kudos to the breeder who came up with that idea! For a better idea, next time you’re in Toys ‘r’ Us or any similar toyshop, have a look at the Pound Puppies, and you’ll see what I mean. Yet it’s not just the look of these cute dogs that I love so much.

Any dog I’ve ever had has always been affectionate - they’re not called man’s best friend for nothing! But there’s something about a puggle that seems to make them even more affectionate than the cuddliest dog. If I’ve had a rotten day at work and I want to come home and scream at the world, Reece (yeah, I know, not the greatest name, but I like it!) will come on over to me and rest his wrinkly little face on my lap. And when I look at him - well, I defy anyone not to melt when a puggle looks dolefully at you!

Even just the way Reece acts on an everyday basis - he probably doesn’t even realize he’s being funny, but that’s the beauty of puggles. Their noses are a little bit longer than the average dog and this can lead to some pretty funny moments. There have been times when I’ve been watching the television, and have almost collapsed laughing at the noises coming out of Reece as he sleeps. Remember the movie "Gremlins", and the little noises that the main character Gizmo would make? This is exactly what a puggle can sound like at times.

One of the best things about puggles is that they’re such a conversation piece as well. Take a walk down the park, or on the beach, and people are will surround you dying to know about your little bundle of joy. And you thought it was just newborn babies that get all the love?! If you’re single and you want to attract a potential partner, trust me; buy a puggle!

There’s a whole ton of things I could say about Reece, or puggles in general. They’re adorable; they’re loving; they’re squishy. But when it comes down to it, nothing I could say would do these wonderful dogs justice. Reece has had babies with my Beagle, Daisy. Therefore, I guess you could consider me a part-time breeder. The love I had for adopting out my little baby puggles and the warm fuzzy feeling of finding them a home is priceless. If you are interested in puggles, the best thing to do is get in touch with a local breeder today and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

The Essentials Of Doggie Dental Care

By Ronny Sikes

We all know that brushing and flossing is a must if we want to keep all our teeth in our old age. Of course we want to take good care of our teeth and mouths because we desire pearly white teeth that are aesthetically appealing. However, we realize the importance of dental hygiene; we need to take care of our teeth so we don’t succumb to disease that could have been prevented by simply brushing and flossing multiple times each day.

So, what about our dogs? They have teeth too, and they need dental care just like us. Though they don’t mind if their teeth aren’t the perfect shade of white, they probably do care if their mouth is poorly taken care of and if they suffer later on in life as a result from lack of attention. Like humans, dogs can have plaque, cavities, gingivitis, and tartar. Though you can take your pet to the local groomer to get their teeth cleaned, you can do it at home. Here’s how to take care of your pet’s teeth easily and effectively.

The best way to prevent periodontal disease and inflammation is by daily brushing your dog’s teeth. Of course, you will want to begin slowly and entice your dog with treats and praise to encourage him or her to allow you to brush their teeth. This takes time, and effort, but it is well worth it.

When you brush your dog’s teeth, you will most likely want to use a finger toothbrush or a simple kid-sized toothbrush. These are gentle, yet they allow the tartar and plaque to loosen up on the teeth and be flushed out. Also, you will need to make sure you use special doggie toothpaste. You can either get this at your personal veterinary office or at your local pet supply store. When you apply the toothpaste to the toothbrush, be sure to get the paste deep into the brush; if it just sits on top it will quickly come off in your pet’s mouth and be ineffective. Be sure to brush your dog’s teeth at a 45-degree angle, because this helps ensure that every tooth gets properly cleaned, and this makes it more comfortable for you as well.

Other ways that you can help your pet remain in good oral health is to feed them dry food instead of wet food. The crunchy chow works to gently scrub teeth as the food is chewed. Also, there are many, many special treat products available that claim to help clean teeth; though these do help, they certainly are not as effective as actually brushing each day. Chew toys are another way to help keep up good dental health. Chew toys with rubber prongs or ones that are textured certainly help gently rub off plaque from the teeth and are good choices for your pet’s oral health.

Just like humans, dental health is important to dogs. Dogs can suffer from periodontal disease, gingivitis, tartar and plaque. There are doggie toothbrushes, toothpaste, chew toys, food, and treats that help keep your pet’s mouth happy and healthy. Help your dog, and keep their mouth and teeth squeaky clean!

The Horrifying Reality of Puppy Mills

By Melissa Turner

When we buy a pet or even shop at a store that sells puppies, we contribute to a heartless underground industry that forces dogs to spend their entire lives in cages constantly breeding to support consumer demand for puppies, states the Humane Society’s website.

Puppy mills are a harsh reality of today’s dog breeding industry. Certainly, not all puppies that are bought and sold in pet stores originated from a puppy mill. However, it is shocking to hear the truth of these horrific mass dog breeding houses. These dogs are bred and raised with sometimes up to hundreds of other dogs at a time. This is a serious health hazard for these newborn puppies, because their cages are often filthy and unkempt. Living conditions such as these practically beg for disease and viruses to enter and grow in the puppies’ bodies, wrecking havoc on their health and immune systems. Many puppy mill pets are not neutered or spayed, neither they given the proper vaccinations and preventative medications that are necessary for their health and well-being.

The majority of puppies who are bred in puppy mills are actually sold online or through newspaper advertisements, though some do appear in pet stores nationwide. Many of these puppy mills claim to sell "pure bred" dogs, but this is not always the case. When these dogs are bred in puppy mills, they also lack the necessary and vital human interaction and companionship. Dogs are affectionate and companionable animals, when they are denied daily affection and interaction with adults and children, they suffer emotionally and mentally.

So, what can you do to help? The Humane Society recommends refusing to buy products or puppies from pet shops that buy and sell dogs. You never know where those puppies have come from. If people don’t buy puppies in pet shops, there will be a significant loss in demand, that hopefully results in these puppy mills going out of business. Also, when you want to buy a new pet, adoption is a wonderful alternative. You will receive a healthy, happy pet, who has most likely already been housebroken, neutered or spayed, and vaccinated; the best part is, you will not be supporting puppy mills through your personal purchase of a puppy from a pet store.

Of course, there are more active ways you can help. The Humane Society asks people to diligently spread the word about the harsh realities of puppy mills, inform their friends of the Stop Puppy Mills website (listed above) as well as making a monetary donation to the Humane Society. It is easy to make a donation online, and it only takes a few minutes of your time if you feel compelled to give. There is also a page that gives interested people additional ideas for helping them stop puppy mills, such as lobbying for new laws that will aid in the shutting down of these mills. Becoming active in a cause such as halting puppy mill production is a rewarding and satisfying experience. Consider helping the Humane Society in their fight against puppy mills.

Melissa Turner writes article about various pet related topics. Her articles and information can be seen on sites such as: Dog-Bed.org, LVE Productions and Dog Training Methods.
