Things To Consider Before Getting A Dog

By V Brown

When it comes to owning a dog there’s a lot more involved than just having a new playmate for the kids, companion for the older person or security for your home.

Are you ready for all your dog will need? The messes in the backyard (and occasional accident inside) the cost of the food, toys and training equipment, do you know where the closest vet is? Do you mind seeing your favourite shoes or morning paper used as a chew toy? These are just the first things you need to consider.

Then you have to start thinking about what type of dog you want: Big or small, short coat or long, do you want a puppy or older dog, pure-bred or mutt?

If you’re planning on introducing a new dog into your family those items mentioned above are just part of what you need to take into consideration before making your final decision.

You need to make sure all family members are prepared to care for your pet: whether that means delegating who feeds the dog, who walks it and who cleans after it etc. If it’s going to be left for one person it may put a strain on your family. You also want to take into account the true cost of owning a dog; aside from the weekly food bill you will also need to pay vet bills, buy worm and flea preventions, possibly pay for training, and you’ll need things like collars, leads, food bowls and perhaps toys (just to save on the expense of having to buy new shoes,) that’s not taking into account particular requirements for certain breeds: some require professional grooming, others may have special medical considerations etc.

Depending on your housing situation you may need to spend time exercising your dog, cleaning the backyard up after your dog has done his business, making sure your dog has adequate toys to keep him entertained if he gets left alone for long periods at a time (while you’re at work etc)

You will also want to consider whether you want a male or female dog each have their pros and cons – then too comes the cost of neutering if you don’t plan on breeding, or if you don’t have your dog neutered dealing with the behaviours and problems this can cause.

While owning a dog can truly be a delight, before you take the step and purchase or rescue one (or give one as a gift) please take into account all that dog ownership entails.

Dog Training - Avoiding the Food Nuisance

By Terry King

Most dogs I know will eat just about anything off the human table that you give them, some may want a quick sniff, others the treat won’t touch the sides. I prefer to eat my meals with my family without a dog hanging around waiting for titbits. If you want to avoid dogs hanging around the food table the best approach is to start as you mean to go on.

In the dog world there is a hierarchy that you may already be aware of, the alpha is at the top with others in a pecking order underneath. In the wild the alpha will eat first, with the more junior members of the pack eating when given permission. This is why even when giving your dogs their own food it is a good idea to make them sit and wait for a few moments, before allowing them to approach their bowl. This reinforces your position in the hierarchy, letting them know they only eat when you give permission.

When you act as the alpha there must be a firm rule that you control access to Food.

As with other areas of dog training it is important to be consistent, never give your dog a treat at the table, don’t allow friends or family to indulge “it was just a small one”. Dogs don’t know which times are appropriate and which aren’t.

A dog’s main sense is the sense of smell they use scent to hunt and scavenge for food. It is natural for a dog to approach when they smell food. A dog will very quickly learn if you indulge them, that the smell of food means they will be given something to eat.

A good habit to get into is to ensure your dog knows to go to set place at your meal times. It can become a relatively stress free routine for your dog to go to its bed when you are eating. A little bit of patience in the early stages will reap rewards. I never mind a couple of cold meals when my new dog is learning to go to its bed when we eat.

You can train your dog not to beg for food by using the same techniques you would use to train them to perform any other desired behaviour. When you have identified a place for them to go, use voice such as commands ‘go’, ’sit’, ‘stay’ or ‘bed’. However don’t be tempted to reward obedience with a treat, since that’s exactly the opposite message you’re trying to get across.

You dog’s health is a good reason for not allowing feeding from the table, one of the major causes in obesity in dogs is the additional food given around human meal times. Many owners that indulge in the practice of feeding from the table or giving scraps do not make a compensating reduction in a dog’s main food portion.

As with any dog training, when teaching good behaviour around food, consistency, patience and persistence are the main ingredients (no pun intended). If you persevere you pet will respond they way you want, even when they smell delicious food.

Diet Guide For Dogs

By John D Ross

A dogs’ nutritional needs differs from humans. What we believe as healthy for us often is not sufficient or appropriate for dogs. To ensure your dog receives the best nutrition you need to understand a dog’s specific needs and how to address these needs. Taking care of man’s best friend does take a little preparation and know-how.

There are essential nutrients needed to grow, go and glow. If your dog does not receive correct nutrients it will possibly result in poor health, stunted growth in puppies, lethargy and a shortened life span.

Dogs need five basic nutrients for survival: carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. These serve different functions in sustaining the health and well being of the dog and out guide will help you ensure your dog receives these nutrients.

1. Proteins

Proteins are the health building block; they are chemicals made of amino acids. Your dog can produce some of these chemicals in their own bodies but the rest need to be supplied through food intake. The best sources of these amino acids are meat and its by products. Dogs can extract proteins from these a lot easier than it can with plant sources. Repeat: meat.

Choose foods that have an adequate amount of protein to help your puppies and dogs grow.

2. Fats

Fat is something everyone tries to avoid it because it can cause many health problems, but dogs, however, just like man, also have a need for the nutrients contained in fat.

The right amount of fat is necessary to promote good skin health and to carry fat-soluble vitamins. Fats are also essential to kidney function and reproductive health - and they make food more tastier too. Too much fat will result of course in obesity and lethargy.

3. Carbohydrates

Fifty percent of your dog’s diet must consist of carbohydrates, necessary for energy. Corn and soybeans are two of the more popular sources of this nutrient. If this source is clean and of good nutritional quality then ensure you dog’s diet contains at least 50% of these. Other carbohydrates include cooked rice and the dry cereals prepared specifically for dogs.

4. Vitamins and Minerals

A dog needs an exact amount of vitamins and minerals to be healthy, and although your dog may receive these nutrients from its general food intake, vitamin supplements for your dog should be considered. Today the formulated commercial dog feeds also make it easier for owners to ensure their dogs receive good nutrition.

Buying Dog Food Tips

Dogs need proper nutrition in order to be healthy, happy and for their coat to be soft and glossy. The cost of any dog food and its brand is only important if dogs could read or pay for the meal. The easiest and best way to find out which food is best for your dog is to observe how their response is to the food they take in.

The following are tips you should remember when feeding dog kibbles, nibbles or any kind of treats.

  • Chocolate is lethal to dogs. The major components are methylxanthine alkaloids and theobromine in regular chocolate and are digested and excreted by humans in under 3 hours but the same compounds when ingested by dogs stays inside them for 18 hours and this has been proven to be fatal. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, excessive urination, hyperactivity, diarrhea and these can be followed by seizure, coma and ultimately death.
  • Read the label of hte product. Dogs must have a diet rich in meat protein,so when you purchase canned foods look for chicken, turkey, any red meat, pork or other animal by products as these keep the dog’s coat smooth and healthy. Dogs prefer meat-based diets because they are easily digestible and is a great source of energy.
  • Don’t give a dog just any bone. Contrary to popular belief, feeding bones to dogs is not necessarily a good idea. Small soft bones gnawed and eaten by dogs can splinter inside their throat and cause them to choke. Chicken necks do not splinter, neither does the brisket bone of any animal, so these are good to give the dog as they also provide gum and teeth care when the dog gnaws on them. Dogs have short digestive tracts and also they have no saliva amylase, the enzyme that humans have that is used to pre-digest starch.
  • Dog food supplements are unnecessary only if you are sure that your dog receives a regular intake of complete and balanced food nutrients. Good sources of carbohydrates include rice, corn, oatmeal, wheat. A highly specialized nutrition diet is only necessary if your dog does not have enough physical activity or is currently undergoing a stressful routine change.
  • Raw fish and eggs are forbidden in a dog’s diet. Consistent consumption of raw eggs makes a dog’s skin flaky as eggs lessen the biotin available in their body and the usual results are dermatitis and hair loss. Raw fish creates a thiamine-deficiency in a dog, and its effects are loss of appetite, abnormal posture, weakness and sometimes death.

Feed your dog a healthy diet as outlined above and he will have always a beautiful coat and give you many years of companionship.

Keeping Your Dog Cool On Hot Days

By Dean Burton

Summer is now in full swing giving dogs the most opportunity to play with their owners. Frisbees are flying, dog parks are crawling, and fetch is in open season. All of this fun with our dogs on hot summer days is great for owners and pets alike, but the heat can cause some problems like exhaustion, dehydration, sunburn, and heat stroke, and humans are not the only ones at risk. Dogs are just as susceptible to the heat. Think what it would be like if you had thick hair all over your body. Take extra care of your puppy this summer by keeping them cool on hot days.

Dehydration is a simple problem to solve for humans or pets alike. The answer is water. Be certain that your dog drinks water regularly. Your dog needs unlimited access to cool drinking water. Keeping hydration is also the starting point for preventing several other heat related issues.

Heat exhaustion is common with dogs that are over exercised when it is hot or extremely humid. They are also more prone to exhaustion if they are overweight, stay outside with no shade, or suffer from lung or heart problems. The symptoms can even escalate to heat stroke, which can lead to death. There are several more specific things you can do as an owner, other than providing water, to prevent the possibility of heat exhaustion or stroke.

Especially in the summer time, try not to leave your dog in the car for any reason. Temperatures in automobiles can rise up to 120 degrees. Even if you are running an errand for a few minutes, think about leaving the air conditioner running, and if your dog spends most of its time outside in the back yard, make sure there is a cool shady spot all day long. If your dog regularly exercises with you, pay careful attention to its pace. Do not push the dog to run faster if it begins to fall behind, especially if this is uncharacteristic of your dog.

The two main cooling systems in dogs are located on their tongue and on their paws. For this reason, cool water to drink, and cool surfaces to stand and lay on can make all of the difference. Try not to force your pet to stand on sun-baked surfaces like cement, metal, or sand. Not only will this prevent them from cooling off, but it can also cause blisters on their paw pads.

Most owners never think about their dog getting sunburned, but dogs are very prone to burning on their noses, ears, and lips. The simplest solution for preventing sunburn is to keep your dog in the shade during the most heat intensive hours of the day, but if you need to be in the sun with your dog during those hours, a little sun block lotion will not hurt. A little on the nose and the ears will do the trick.

Summer is a time when pets and owners alike can stretch their legs and enjoy the great outdoors. Don’t let the heat get you down. Instead, prevent any problems caused by the heat with a little extra planning and consideration. Your dog will love you for it, like they do everything else.

Successful Dog Training Methods

By Wade Robins

A very good relationship between you and your pet consists of mutual understanding, but how can you achieve that? By means of dog training methods, of course, though you should not be alarmed if you encounter different methods and different experts because the outcome is the same: getting your dog to listen to you, not to damage any goods in your house, to behave correspondingly to your commands and so on. Some special dog training methods are required when you desire to teach your dog not to be aggressive and to cease barking when unnecessary, because it is general knowledge some dogs start barking at most inappropriate times, when you would like them to follow your commands instead.

As you should expect, a well-known dog training method is the one that suggests offering rewards to the pet in case he behaves accordingly. It is a token of your appreciation towards him, and indicates that you accepted his behavior. It is a slow process, since you must clarify the command to the dog and repeat it until he finally acts correctly: when you make a “roll over” command for example and he behaves in the manner you told him, you have to give him a treat and praise him; otherwise the command is repeated, the dog must be guided in order to understand and if it’s successfully followed, the reward is given.

Different Dog Training Methods, Different Aids

Aids are required in many dog training methods, such as whistles or special tool you can find at any pet shop near your house. These tools facilitate the progress of understanding, they signal to the dog that a command has been made: the clicker method is one of these, of which experts in the field think the world. It consists of positive response from the trainer and never negative response: if the pet obeys, he’s given a treat, otherwise he never gets punished; when you learn to master a clicker, bought from specific shops, this technique will definitely work for you.

This clicker system of training has thrived especially in the whale-training field, and its success is proven with dogs, too: as long as the owner is persistent in making a click when the animal’s behavior is the one desired, and he gives him the reward every time, the pet learns to develop a conditional instinct in connection with the sound of the click, and he will emulate the wishes of his master to hear that sound again and to be, thus, rewarded.

There are downsides to every method, but techniques that call for negative response from the trainer, if inappropriate behavior is involved, seem to bear quite a few risks. In other words, if the owner has the dog punished in case it eats the cherry tarts, the animal understands it’s an undesired behavior, but just in the strict presence of the master. If you leave home, it will continue on eating the cherry tarts made especially for you perhaps. Consequently, this dog training method is not very good for the owner, nor for the pet. However, it is recommended that you devise a list with what you think your dog should learn, when searching for an expert trainer, to give him important guidelines.

Dog Health Issues

By Teri Salvador

Like human health problems, some dog diseases, injuries and physical ailments are serious while others are not. Fortunately, the vast majority of health problems that dogs commonly experience can be successfully treated with medications, physical therapy, surgery, or other types of medical treatments.

Heartworm:

Heartworm is a disease caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis, which lives in the right side of the heart and the adjacent blood vessels. Its presence in these blood vessels causes cardiovascular weakness, compromised lung incapacity, and eventual death. Heartworm occurs primarily in dogs but can also occur in cats and other animals on rare occasions.

Dog Arthritis:

There is a wide range of treatment options available for treating arthritis (also known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease). Dogs with degenerative joint disease need adequate rest. Rest helps to decrease inflammation and strengthen joints. Too much exercise and over-use of the damaged joints will aggravate symptoms and may also accelerate joint destruction. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to determine how much rest and exercise a pet needs.

Too much exercise may make matters worse while not enough may reduce muscle tone. Your veterinarian can assist you in determining how much exercise and rest is ideal for your pet. As a guideline, any activity that causes your pet to become acutely lame for a period of time afterward is excessive and the level of activity should be reduced accordingly. Avoid strenuous exercise and periods of overexertion, which can accelerate the destruction within the joints.

The onset of dog arthritis can be due to a number of factors, including injury, obesity, genetic predisposition and poor nutrition. Some of the symptoms include stiffness, difficulty in climbing stairs, whimpering when standing, unusual movements, noticeable swelling in a limb, thickening joints and shying away from petting. If you do notice any of these signs, be sure to have your pet checked for canine arthritis.

Cancer:

Just like in humans, cancer in dogs is a very serious condition which can seriously impact the life of both the pet and its owner. There are several treatment options available depending on the nature and severity of the dog cancer, and often a combination of conventional and alternative therapies can be the most effective. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it is believed that environmental and hereditary factors do play a role. Exposure to toxins, poor dietary habits, lack of exercise and underlying health issues can all increase the risk. Symptoms of cancer in dogs will depend on the location of the tumor, and can range from gastrointestinal problems such as bleeding, vomiting and seizures, urinary problems, Cushing’s and loss of coordination.

Getting an accurate diagnosis is crucial, so it’s important to have your dog tested immediately if you notice any changes in its behavior, notice any discomfort or can see or feel any stage bodily masses. Your veterinarian will be able to perform diagnostic tests to determine where the cancer is located and how severe the condition is. Based on this analysis he or she can recommend a course of action to treat the condition effectively and maintain the health of your pet

Depending on the nature and location of the cancer, there are several treatment options, including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to remove the growth and possibly the surrounding tissues. Medications may also be administered. Other treatment options that are often used in conjunction with conventional methods are natural remedies that can help treat dog cancer as well as slow cancerous growths, boost immune function and improve general health and well-being. Medical science has chemotherapy, radiation and drug treatments available today is much better than what it was just a decade ago. Symptoms of cancer in dogs can be managed effectively, and conventional and natural therapies are proving effective in this battle.

Ensure your dog’s health with a proper high quality diet, regular exercise and a clean, toxin-free environment. If you suspect cancer, make sure you talk to your vet right away. Find out all of the treatment options that are available.

Small Dog Clothes and Dog Apparel - Is Handmade or Manufactured Better?

By Grant Carroll

Many pet owners that shop for small dog clothes and special dog apparel for there tiny breed babies wonder whether to purchase handmade clothing or mass manufactured. There are several differences between the two that can affect your choice, so it’s important to understand them all. The first major difference is price. A lot of people don’t want to spend a ton of money on clothing for their canine, but handmade sweaters and jackets are going to be much more expensive. It’s not unusual, for example, to spend $40 on one hand knit sweater. A mass produced sweater, on the other hand, will go for about $15.

Another major difference is quality of fabric and material. An inexpensive knit sweater is much more apt to unravel after extended use than a handmade one. This is because people spend more time if their knitting each and every piece of apparel by hand. Mass production calls for speed so sometimes the work is not as tight. This is also true of the stitching on jackets and coats. After about two winter seasons, some of the stuffing may start to spill out a bit from wear and tear whereas a tighter stitching on a handmade item will help it last longer.

Sometimes, the fabric and material that goes into making these small dog clothes is of different quality. For example, a lot of winter dog apparel and warm clothing is knit with an acrylic blend yarn, and coats are often made with a nylon waterproof fabric. This can be the same for both handmade and manufactured, so if it’s absolutely necessary that your dog’s sweater be made of cotton, be sure to ask before you buy. That being said, it’s not difficult to find handmade apparel that’s made of thicker quality material; just remember that you’re going to pay for it.

Best Dogs With Children

By Sandra Oberreuter

Dogs are children’s best friends. Every child wants a dog to play with and love.

“A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.” – Robert Bechley

The question though is what breed of dog is best for your children?

There are many breeds of dogs that are good with children. Some have a great rapport with children like the Golden Retriever. Some love to play with kids like the Labrador Retriever. Beagles are patient and love to play with children.

Most small breed dogs are not good with children especially small children. One exception is the Bichon Frise who is great with well-behaved kids.

Some dogs are too big to be around small children but with older childrens they can be wonderful companions.

Besides choosing what dog would be great for your child there are other considerations to take into account. For instance, what kind of time do you have to take care of a puppy or dog if your child is to small to help? What is your lifestyle? Where should you purchase a dog? What are the health concerns of different breeds? These are just a few considerations you should look at.

Therefore, research different dog breeds before you decide on what dog to get your children. Your child and his “dog” will become great companions and have lots of fun if you do your homework first and get the right dog for him or her.

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself” – Josh Billings
